5 Tactics to Promote Your New Mobile App

When your business has its new app built, you’ll obviously want to ensure it is as visible as possible to ensure you get as many downloads as possible. Especially if your app is intended as a revenue stream – perhaps with in-app purchases or subscriptions – a strong promotional strategy is vital. To help you get underway and begin to raise your new business app’s profile, try these five low to no cost tactics…

1.   Write a press release

Generating free editorial coverage is the ultimate win for many marketing and PR managers. Unlike an advert, an editorial feature lends credibility to your brand because it comes across as a seal of approval from an impartial third party and often, a respected title or reporter.

To get your promotional machine into gear, write a press release which announces the release of your new app. Focus on why this is news – flag up unusual and helpful features for example – and include the basics of what users can expect from the app. Outline the problems it solves or the value it adds to users as well as what makes your app exciting and unique.

Next, create a target list of relevant newspapers and magazines, both related to your particular industry sector as well as local media and send each a copy of that news. Don’t forget to offer journalists a free download of your app so they can try it for themselves.

2.   Set up sponsored social media posts

Social media platforms like Facebook have been slowly dialling down the number of posts they show from brands organically so for something as important as raising awareness for your new app, you’ll need to put some budget behind it. The audience you’re aiming for will determine which social media platform is most useful to you but, look at ways you can use paid adverts and boosted posts to get into newsfeeds.

3.   Approach influencers

Influencer marketing has been big news for a number of years but if anything, it’s now more popular the ever. The idea here is that you identify credible people in your field, or those that your audience looks up to. That could be a social media personality with a following that ties in with your desired user base or a local celebrity or blogger.

Reaching out with options for collaborating is a great start – you’ll want to be creative here and make tailored suggestions as to how each influencer could potentially work with you to promote your app launch. Be mindful that the best influencer content is not promotional in nature so focus on ways the app will naturally fit into their usual content.

4.   Add to your website

This is an easy but absolutely essential step – give your app its own page on your site so all of your web visitors are made aware of its existence. You’ll want to make it easy to download too, so places badges for each App Store ready for download.

5.   Send out an email campaign

If you have a mailing list (and you should) create an email campaign that celebrates your app. As well as announcing its launch, you of course want your subscribers to download the app so give them an incentive to do so such as a prize draw, a competition, challenge or special offer. Make it fun!
